To Do or Not to Do the Big Chop?

image: Pinterest

For many people with natural hair, the “big chop” isn’t just a hairstyle change—it’s a defining moment. It’s like an ultimate reset button for your hair journey, representing a lot of things. Like freedom, exhaustion from hair and maybe even a desperate need for change. Whatever your reason, deciding whether or not to actually go ahead with it can be quite daunting. A real emotional tug-of-war, with hope and excitement on one side and apprehension with a strong pull on the other. So, what’s the right choice?

First things first, if you’re not already clear on what the ‘big chop’ is, where have you been since ‘08? The big chop is essentially cutting off all your relaxed, chemically-treated, or damaged hair, leaving you with your natural texture. But, for the super brave, the big chop is literally chopping off all your hair and starting afresh.

Like with all big decisions, when in doubt, compile a Pro & Con list to help you get to the right answer for you. We’ve written up a list that can help you get to your yes (or no) - but if you really want to make a thoroughly thought out decision, own the list. Add some pros and cons that are personal to you and then, decide.

Pros (Let’s chop it off!)

Cons (Hol’Up!)

  1. A chance to starting afresh

Think of it as clearing the slate. The big chop allows you to eliminate years of heat damage, split ends, and chemical processing. Your hair gets a chance to grow without compromise, and you can fully embrace its natural state.

  1. Emotional Readiness

The big chop is more than a haircut; it’s a lifestyle change. Are you emotionally prepared for what might feel like a drastic transformation? For many, hair is tied to identity, and cutting it off can stir up feelings of vulnerability.

Are you ready for that? Because if you aren’t, then maybe you have a little more inner work to do before taking this step. If you’re not ready to chop it all off, transitioning might be a better alternative. This means gradually growing out your natural hair while trimming off the relaxed ends over time.

  1. Radical self-acceptance

Cutting off your hair can be an emotional journey, but it’s also one of self-love. It’s about stepping into your authenticity, learning to love your hair in its natural form, and rejecting societal expectations.

  1. Low maintenance (for a while)

A TWA is easy to manage. There’s no lengthy detangling process or intricate styling—just a simple routine of moisturising, oiling, and going about your day.

  1. Facing Public Perception

Let’s be honest—society hasn’t always been kind to natural hair. While the tides are shifting, you might still encounter unsolicited comments or even moments of self-doubt. Ask yourself if you feel confident navigating that space.

  1. Claw back your time

Without the need for relaxers or lengthy salon appointments, you’ll likely find your haircare expenses dropping dramatically.

If you feel like you’re not ready yet, that’s okay!

The big chop is a personal choice, and there’s no right or wrong time to do it—or even a rule that says you have to. Whether you choose to transition, maintain your relaxed hair, or chop it all off, the most important thing is that you’re doing what feels best for you.

After all, hair grows, but your journey with it is what truly matters.
